バートランド・ラッセルの象と亀

　ラッセルの自叙伝「Portraits from memory, and other 
essays」の中に、REFLECTIONS ON MY EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAYという項目があり、その一部（本の55ページ）に以下の記述を見つけた。

「But as the work proceeded, I was
continually reminded of the fable about the elephant and the tortoise. Having constructed an elephant upon which the mathematical world could rest, I found the elephant tottering, and proceeded to construct a tortoise to keep the elephant from falling. But the tortoise was no more secure than the elephant, and after some twenty years of very arduous toil, I came to the conclusion that there was nothing more
that I could do in the way of making mathematical knowledge indubitable.」

　こうなると、昨日書いた記事の中で言及したホーキング博士の、「ラッセルかも」という発言は、信憑性を帯びてきた。もっとも、ラッセルの書きぶりでは、当時の英国では皆が知っていた寓話なのかもしれない。そして、亀の上の象に乗っているのは、「mathematical world」だ。
